Technology and the Business of Law: Surviving the Legal Market Disruptions that Challenge Traditional Business Models

Law firms of almost every size must change the way they conduct business or they will face serious challenges in the future. One big driver of this disruption is technology. Technology has created legal service delivery alternatives that can be qualitatively better, more efficient and costs clients less than the same services delivered from traditional firms. Given this, the questions are… Will the traditional law firm survive? If so, how must these firms reinvent themselves to counter the ways technology is changing client thinking, behavior, cost control strategies, outsourcing, matter management and billing practices? Mr. Butler’s presentation will review the current challenges facing traditional law firms, explain how improving law firm productivity using technology is imperative, review what actions firms might take to develop competitive advantages, identify which cultural and behavioral changes firm’s need to make and, lastly, speak to how firms must view the role of technology differently if they are to bring about change.

Speaker:  Frank Butler is the founder and CEO of Proxios, a company he founded in 1999. Proxios is a high-touch, people oriented service that, depending on customer needs, can take responsibility for delivering the entire range of IT functions and, where appropriate, apply proven organizational development and coaching techniques to improve the effectiveness of customer staff, so customers can realize the highest value, strategic outcomes from technology. Proxios works with clients on a national basis in many different vertical markets and has been especially successful working with small and large law firms. Prior to forming Proxios Mr. Butler was the founder and President of Information Technologies, an IT consulting company specializing in consulting and software development exclusively for the legal market. This company quickly grew and was 461 on Inc. Magazine’s list of the 500 fastest growing companies. Mr. Butler received his undergraduate degree from University of Richmond, has his Masters from the University of New Hampshire and received his Certificate in Information Systems from Virginia Commonwealth University.
